Most women who have monthly menstrual cycles have experienced painful ovulation at one time or another. It is practically a mystery condition, but it can be controlled by the sufferer.

Painful ovulation is also called “mittelschmerz”; a German word that translates as “middle pain.” The term derives from the fact that ovulation occurs between menstrual cycles. The pain is felt in the lower abdomen or pelvic area, and may be intermittent in its occurrences. The intensity of the pain can vary; it may be felt as a mild ache or may be a stabbing, severe pain.

Some women never even realize they are ovulating; no pain, no indications whatsoever present themselves. In others, however, the pain arrives every month without fail to announce that ovulation is occurring. There is no predisposition for the condition, and no method of determining who will and who won’t experience it. The pain may be experienced by some women who are mystified as to its origin or cause.

So how can a woman know if she is experiencing painful ovulation, or mittelschmerz? The best method is to document and time the pain felt. Beginning with the first day of the menstrual cycle count ahead 14 days to arrive at the approximate time for ovulation. By keeping track of several cycles, ovulation times and any pain felt, you should be able to determine whether the pain is associated with ovulation.

The cause of painful ovulation is merely conjecture. The process of ovulation, however, is well known. The developing egg in the ovary is surrounded by follicular fluid, both of which are released at ovulation, as well as a small amount of blood. It is thought that the discomfort felt may be caused by irritation of the abdominal cavity by the misplaced blood and fluid. The pain would then subside as this foreign matter is absorbed by the body.

Any pain or discomfort felt should be reported to your gynecologist. She or he will likely want to perform a pelvic exam in order to rule out any other conditions such as endometriosis or cysts. Other tests may be recommended, especially in cases of severely painful ovulation.

The only preventative measure effective against painful ovulation is by stopping ovulation, which is only possible by using certain methods of birth control. To control the pain felt during this time, over the counter pain medication is recommended. Some women also find that applying heat or taking a soothing warm bath will alleviate the symptoms.

While there is no known cause for the painful ovulation felt by many women, it is helpful to know that the condition is at least recognized by medical professionals. Although the condition remains a mystery, the pain caused can be controlled and eased.

The idea behind the pregnancy ovulation calendar is simple: by keeping a record of your basal body temperature (your temperature at rest), you can familiarize yourself with your menstrual cycle. This can help you know when your fertile days have occurred and predict when they will happen going forward. Useful as this method might be, there are limitations to using a calendar to track your ovulation. Other techniques might be more efficient at predicting your fertile days.

Pros and cons of keeping an ovulation calendar

One of the main advantages of keeping a calendar is that it is the most affordable way of tracking your cycle. There are free calendars available on the web that you can download and print out for your own use. Digital basal thermometers cost an average of $10. All you have to do is keep your chart and thermometer handy in a bedside drawer and record your basal temperature first thing in the morning.

For some women, this is where the disadvantage comes in. This method is most accurate if you take your temperature at the same time in the morning, every single day. Oversleeping one morning or simply forgetting to take your temperature can disrupt the pattern in your basal body chart.

Another disadvantage is that your basal temperature only tells you when you’ve ovulated after it already happened, as indicated by the rise in temperature. Finding out your ovulation too late might mean missing the window of peak fertility. Although you can use the ovulation calendar to predict your ovulation, you can only do so accurately after you’ve kept several charts or records of several cycles.

Finally, an unusual event like a late night at work or illness can make significant changes to your basal temperature. This will disrupt the pattern of your chart and could mislead you into thinking that you have already ovulated.

Alternatives to an ovulation calendar

Although keeping a calendar will make you more familiar with your cycle, some women may not have the time to maintain one religiously. With your doctor’s approval, here are some other ways that can help you time intercourse around your most fertile days.

Keep watch for fertile cervical mucus

The change in your cervical mucus is a helpful indicator of ovulation. Although every woman’s body is different, cervical mucus is usually dry after menstruation. As ovulation approaches, you’ll find that your cervical mucus becomes creamy and wet. During your most fertile days, it should have the consistency of raw egg whites.

To check your cervical mucus, wash your hands and make sure they are dry. Place your middle or index finger inside your vagina and try to swab a sample near the cervix. Remove your finger and observe the consistency of the mucus by rolling it on your thumb or pressing your finger together and stretching the mucus.

*If there is barely any mucus or if the mucus is sticky, you have not ovulated yet.
*If your cervical mucus is creamy, you may be nearing ovulation.
*If your mucus is more watery and stretchy, it’s likely that you’ll be ovulating in a few days. You can start having intercourse at this time.
*If your cervical mucus is very wet, resembles egg whites, and stretches for over an inch, then you are very fertile.

Have sex frequently

It makes sense to keep intercourse to a minimum for maximum fertility; after all, it takes 90 days for a new batch of sperm to be made. However, researchers from Sydney discovered that having frequent sex may be the key to conceiving. The findings, which were presented at the Fertility Society of Australia’s annual meeting in 2004, examined the semen samples of 42 infertile men who were asked to ejaculate for seven consecutive days. Thirty-seven of them had fewer sperm with damaged DNA, as compared to those who went three days without ejaculating. The researchers believe that DNA damage in sperm cells occurs if they stay too long in the epididymis, the tunnel where sperm passes and becomes mature. Although these findings are only preliminary, there seems to be no harm in having frequent intercourse as you approach your most fertile days in your cycle.

Use ovulation predictor kits

Of all the tools used to predict ovulation, urine-based ovulation predictor kits are among the most accurate. Ovulation predictor kits are designed to measure the levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. LH levels are low before you ovulate, but they start rising rapidly as ovulation approaches. The ovary releases a mature egg 38-44 hours after the LH surge. The remaining LH in your blood is filtered by the kidney and deposited in your urine.

Ovulation predictor kits work much like take-home pregnancy tests. All you have to do is place a urine sample where indicated, and wait for the results. The instructions in the kit will tell you which indicators on the testing strip to watch for to determine if the results are positive or negative. Testing positive is a signal to get busy, because you may ovulate in 12-24 hours.

Like all methods, the ovulation predictor kit has limitations. Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome have high LH levels, which means they will test positive even if they are not ovulating. And even though ovulation predictor kits can identify the LH surge that occurs before ovulation, it does not confirm ovulation itself.

One of the most important things you will need to know when you are trying to get pregnant is the best days for you to conceive. Trying is fun at any time, but if you want to narrow down the period you are most fertile then you need to keep track of your menstrual cycle and the times when you are most receptive to becoming pregnant.

Judging your fertility period can be as low tech as buying a calendar and marking different days, to high tech and investing in an ovulation prediction kit where you get a digital analysis of your days for highest conception. In either case, it is a good idea to know a bit about your fertility cycle before you go out and invest in a lot of equipment.

You are most fertile about 1/3 of the month. Now you may hear of other women conceiving at different times, and it is possible their cycle was not as regular, or were unaware that sperm can actually live up to 5 days in a woman’s body (more typically it is two days, but there have been cases of up to five).

If you haven’t already started tracking your menstrual cycles, then you will need to start doing this now. The first day of your menstrual cycle starts on the first day you start bleeding. If you have already been tracking your cycle, then take a look at the last 8-12 months of your cycles. The total length of your period is from the first day you bled of the previous month, to the first day you started bleeding of the following month.

After you count the number of days of your periods you have recorded, pick out the shortest and longest monthly cycles. Subtract 18 from the shortest period (this is going to give you the earliest fertility day possible) and subtract 11 days from your longest cycle (this is going to give you the latest fertility day possible).

Now you have a range of days in your cycle in which to try to conceive! Start on the day beginning your fertility cycle, and finish as late as the last day. If you keep to this formula, you are bound to conceive within a couple of months. Even if you have not tracked your cycles so far, you can still use this method of calculation, tracking each monthly menstrual as it occurs. Recalculate your numbers based on the last 12 months only, even if you have tracked further back.

Another way to monitor fertility is through cervical mucus. It might sound gross, but it is part of the woman’s natural body function. Mucus is actually responsible for drawing the man’s sperm up into her cervix in order to fertilize her eggs. To monitor cervical mucus, you would examine it every day during your cycle (starting with day 1 of bleeding) and record the way it looks.

After your menstruation, you will generally have about 5 dry days, without much cervical mucus. As you approach your fertility period, your mucus secretions will change from cloudy (or even yellowish) to a clear egg white consistency. Your fertile period is 2 days before you reach this consistency, and two days after as well.

Now that you are armed with a few tricks to keep track of your best days for conception. Make sure you have fun with your conception, you don’t want it to be all business, being relaxed and happy is important to the process too!

To make the things even easier and more fun, I suggest you using this free ovulation predictor.
